Medical

Women who engage in the street-based sex trade often face barriers to health care. They worry about being judged by health care professionals, because they are involved in the sex trade and/or because they use substances. Women also report not feeling safe in local clinics, and worry about running into dealers and abusive male partners in those spaces. The WISH Clinic is an on-site clinic located within the WISH Drop-In Centre. It was generously funded by a private donor who was referred to the project by the BC Women’s Hospital Foundation. This clinic is staffed by Nurse Practitioners from BC Women’s Hospital once a week. It is so important for WISH participants to be able to access a safe, women-only clinic in a familiar setting like WISH. Last year alone, 722 referrals were made in the WISH clinic, and Nurse Practitioners provided a wide variety of services. In addition to providing health care services to women in our community, WISH has also been a community research partner with the BC Centre For Excellence in HIV/AIDS’ AESHA Project, which seeks to map and understand sex-workers’ access to health care services.

Learning

Instructors at the WISH Learning Centre are experts in the needs of adult learners who are marginalized. They offer a wide range of activities which offer women opportunities to: develop their communication skills. become engaged in community affairs. develop the ability to self-advocate. work toward stabilizing their lives. learn computer skills. Write letters, journals, and poetry. Engage in arts and crafts. The facilitators also provide tutoring for those who are working to upgrade their education. Women can borrow books and magazine from the centre as well, and WISH welcomes donations of these.
